This Week’s One-Hit Wonder (OHW) is ‘Baker Street’ (#8 1972) by Gerry Rafferty (1947-2011). Named after the street in Marleybone, City of Westminster, London the song was written by Gerry when he stayed at a friend’s flat when frequently visiting solicitors when extricating himself from the group ‘Stealers Wheel’. It was released on the album ‘City to City’ which was a major hit worldwide. Gerry made a series of excellent albums during his long career.
The now famous saxophone solo was played by session musician Raphael Ravenscroft. He was paid 27 pounds by cheque which was said to have bounced but that was later denied by Raphael.
